Local students mix math and baseball with MLB STEM League

Jeremiah Hindsman with the Miami Marlins necklace third from left Jayvion Dickerson second from the left and Amy Hever right with STEM League participants Photo courtesy MLBPA Credit MLBPA Two Atlanta students were among four nationwide selected to attend the MLB All-Star Contest and Home Run Derby last month due to their standout performance in the Regional MLB STEM League STEM League was launched in partnership with the MLB Players Trust and the nonprofit Learn Fresh in This initiative uses a baseball-themed board event with math to boost academic achievement and engagement in students By blending baseball strategy with math the model is designed to make learning both competitive and fun Jayvion Dickerson a rising high school senior from Palmetto and Jeremiah Hindsman a rising eighth grader from East Point won the Atlanta Regional STEM League Tournament on June earning them the invitation to Truist Park for the All-Star Match Around students across the country and the world competed this year I ve constantly liked and been really good at math Hindsman explained This experience established me new procedures I could use it in real life It was fun and cool to mix math and baseball In addition to the students from the United States two students from Japan one from the Dominican Republic and one from Brazil also attended Hindsman s and Dickerson s performances made them eligible for the All-Star experience They had on-field access during Home Run Derby batting practice and watched the All-Star meeting at Truist Park Hindsman can still recall his reaction when he determined out he was going to go to the All-Star Competition and get to meet particular of the world s best players I was so excited I smiled really big and reported my mom right away he commented I felt so proud and happy that me and Jayvion s hard work paid off Amy Hever the director of the MLB Players Trust is excited about this particular project and how it ties back to the mission of the trust which aims to backing causes that matter to players such as youth empowerment and development This innovative effort brings excitement of baseball into the classroom Hever commented We are trying to cultivate a deeper appreciation for baseball by making it more accessible engaging and relevant to students from all backgrounds For Hindsman and Dickerson the STEM League has done just that creating an experience that they will never forget This initiative will continue next year at the MLB All-Star Competition in Philadelphia Hindsman urged other students to join the STEM League and gave advice for those considering the opportunity If you want to join the STEM League don t be afraid to try new things he commented It s okay if you don t know everything Just have fun ask questions and try your best The post Local students mix math and baseball with MLB STEM League appeared first on Rough Draft Atlanta
