Bridgewater-Raynham takes down Westwood in nonleague matchup
BRIDGEWATER Longtime Bridgewater-Raynham head coach Cheryl Seavey understands it s going to take time for the Trojans to mesh B-R graduated seven players from last year s group and the cohesion for a new Trojans cast wasn t fully there in their girls basketball season opener Saturday against Westwood But there were signs of everything clicking and despite particular uneven play B-R still came away with a - nonleague win at Monti Gymnasium to spoil the debut of new Westwood head coach AK Joyce Ultimately we re a crew that has to recreate its identity Seavey reported We lost a substantial amount of our roster last year So now it s an opportunity for these kids that were part of the process last year but may not have had to shoulder as much responsibility figuring out how to shoulder that responsibility Defense looks to be a major part of B-R s reshaped identity After allowing Westwood - to outcome points in the first quarter the Trojans surrendered just points over the remaining three frames B-R - took away Westwood s outside shooting as the Wolverines who hit -of- triples in the first quarter missed nine of their final shots from deep The Trojans in the second half also limited the tandem of Julie Hogan and Lizzie Weeman who combined for of Westwood s first-half points I m very fortunate that I have a few really intelligent basketball players Seavey revealed In the second half we really hammered in to the offense that we saw and how to make those fixes defensively Balanced scoring could form the backbone for B-R too as that offensive approach helped the Trojans get ahead of the Wolverines in the third quarter and then hold them off With Westwood keying in on B-R forward Camden Strandberg junior point guard Lila Polansky sparked a - run midway through the third quarter with a traditional -point play and a long jumper Ashley Varnum then went coast-to-coast to give B-R its first lead of the tournament The multiple contributors was essential to B-R pulling away in the fourth quarter as Polansky netted a team-high points and Varnum added nine while Claire Roy and Tessa Convent chipped in with seven and nine points respectively off the bench It really shows that the gang can play well together Polansky revealed They re locking Cam down I know I can hit Ashley I know I can hit Tessa We have enough people to get it going together
